Nicson: a new friend to the Pets fold, but a familiar face on the dancefloor. The Seville-born Flumo Recordings boss has a body of work that spans most of the 2000s under a variety of guises. Regardless of what hat he’s worn at the time, though, the consistent thread in his off-grid house style has been very much from the left-side… Just as it is right here with this beefy five-track Pets debut.
‘I’m In Love’ sets the perfect scene. Saddling up with fellow Flumo Sevillian Dixie Yure, it’s a swaggering, loose-limbed party piece with a riff that doesn’t just bend you ‘Upside Down’ (as the EP title suggests) but inside out as well thanks to its ‘Erotic Discourse’ style hypnosis. It’s backed by ‘Destiny Dancer’, a flamboyant jacking track that has us swooning from the off with its woozy textures and hazy finish, and ‘No Way Dream’, a blissful nod to the deepest Chicago foundations.
Deeper into the trove we find more treasures; ‘Sampled Soap’ swings with a sweet break and filtered chords that pushed through with the soft 4x4 and loopy vocal before ‘Warehousing’ closes with a final nod to house music’s spiritual home. Breezy, soulful, timeless. A new record to all of us, but a universal feeling on the dancefloor. Turn those frowns ‘Upside Down’…
